David Madras is a songwriter, singer, and instrumentalist. Born and raised in Toronto, he honed his songwriting craft by frequenting open mics, playing jazz piano, writing for musical theatre, and listening to anything that came his way. All contributed to a vivid sense of what makes great music tick.

Folk and pop most broadly inform David’s music, and his love for those two genres are equally apparent. His sound combines a fresh, melodic pop sensibility with the down-to-earth craftsmanship of folk music and Tin Pan Alley. Favourite songwriters include country staples such as Jason Isbell and Brandy Clark as well as R&B savants like Frank Ocean and Miguel; he believes that strong songwriting is universal.

“Early Bird Special”, David’s long-awaited debut album, was recorded and mostly written in 2017. It prominently displays his range as a writer and performer, opening with the sweet, sunny “No Chances”, the beachy rock of “Ship Leaving Harbour”, and the muscular drive of “Feeling Red” and “Porcelain”. The record continues with the laid-back, yearning “Me and You” and “Niagara Falls in August”, before plunging into the foot-stompers “Hercules” and “Hell”, and closing with the delay-soaked ballad “Runaway” and the bluesy “Begin”. “Early Bird Special” blurs genre with ease, at once reminiscent of 1970s Laurel Canyon Americana and 2000s power pop. The band elides the roles of coffee-shop troubadours and bar-room entertainers, replete with rich organs and ringing slide guitars.

“Early Bird Special” was released on August 17, 2018. You can check out the album on David’s Bandcamp page (https://davidmadras.bandcamp.com), or any major purchasing or streaming service. "David harkens from the great tradition of Canadian singer-songwriters. Well crafted, nakedly honest songs direct from the heart."

Darryl Neudorf (Grammy-nominated producer - Neko Case, Sarah McLachlan, The New Pornographers)

"Well-crafted songwriting by on of Toronto's artists to watch. David Madras's new record is honest and light-hearted with a breezy pop sensibility. A definite must-hear."
